There’s no better way to combat chilly weather than a cup of hot cocoa. If your kids are like mine, you go through a lot of it during the fall and winter months.
Regardless if my kids are cold from playing outside, or from attending to farm chores, they enjoy a cup of hot cocoa. Although I like the convenience of a pre-packaged mix, I prefer to know all the ingredients my kids consume. I’ve come up with my own delicious hot cocoa mix.
The recipe is simple to make. In a large bowl combine powdered milk, powdered sugar, dark cocoa, and cornstarch. It’s important to mix slowly by hand to incorporate the ingredients without causing the powders to fly out. I have found stirring with a wire whisk effective. Store the mixture in an airtight container.
To make a serving, put 3 tablespoons of the mixture into a standard-sized mug. Add hot water and stir. Top with marshmallows as desired.
With temperatures suddenly dropping in our area, I have made a double batch of this mix. I’ve stored most of it in a larger airtight container in my pantry and left a smaller container easily accessible to my kids. A kettle of water is often warming on my stove.
Hot Cocoa may not be sugar-free, but in moderation, it’s a wonderful cold-weather treat for my kids. This recipe is so delicious, I occasionally enjoy a cup with them.
